A service contract ends in one of two ways: it reaches its stated limit, or it is cancelled. Before either happens, there is a window of notices, offers, deadlines, and possibly a gap, and that window follows its own steps. Map it before the final stretch of your coverage.

Find the end point in the contract

Contracts end by years, by miles, or by whichever comes first. Find the exact end language, including how the odometer reading is measured and whether the term starts at signing or at a later date. Write both limits on the same page as your renewal reminder, so you are not guessing which one is closer.

The notice step

Some providers or sellers send a notice before the term ends, and some do not. Ask where that notice goes, whether it goes to the mailing address on file, and what to do if you move or change your phone or email. Do not assume coverage continues if a notice never arrives. Ask in writing, and update your contact information with the provider as soon as it changes.

The offer and the decision deadline

A renewal or extension offer usually arrives with a price basis, a decision deadline, and a description of what changes. Read whether the new terms match the old, whether the age or mileage limit has changed, and whether a new waiting period applies. Do not treat the offer as final until you hold the signed renewal. Compare it against the original contract, not against the seller's pitch.

Lapse, grace, and reinstatement

If the term ends without renewal, ask what happens to claims already in progress, whether there is any grace period, and whether coverage can be reinstated later. Reinstatement often comes with its own waiting period. For a general look at how waiting periods differ across providers, see the list of companies ordered by waiting period on this site. Keep proof of any repair done during a gap, because a later reinstatement may not reach back to cover it.

Questions to ask before the last month

When exactly does coverage end, and how is the odometer measured for that limit? Will you send a notice, and to where? What is the decision deadline? Do the renewal terms change coverage, limits, or waiting periods? Is there a grace period after expiry? Can a lapsed contract be reinstated, and on what terms? Write the answers down before the last month starts, so you are choosing from a plan instead of from a deadline.
