Most of what a service contract promises is shaped by a short list of defined words near the front of the form. A term such as breakdown, wear, or covered component may read like ordinary English, but the form gives it a specific meaning, and that meaning is the one a claims handler will use.

Find the definitions section

Look for a section titled definitions, or for capitalised words that appear throughout the form. Each time a capitalised term appears in a coverage or exclusion sentence, go back to its definition. Read the definition in full, including any examples and any lists of what the term does and does not include.

The words to check first

Breakdown. Ask whether it means a part that stops working, a part that has worn past a limit, or a part that is worn but still working. The difference can decide whether a worn component is covered at all.

Wear and normal use. These words often sit in exclusions. Ask whether a part replaced at a planned interval is treated as wear.

Covered component. Ask whether the list is named part by part or grouped by system, and whether a grouped system includes parts you would not expect.

Authorized repair facility. Ask whether any shop can do the work, or only a shop the contract company approves, and how you find one.

Date of purchase and odometer. Ask which date starts the term, and how mileage is read when the car has been driven past a figure written on a sales sheet.

Compare the definitions with the promise

A sales page that says the contract covers the engine is making a claim about a category. The definitions decide which parts of that category count. Where a sales summary and the form disagree, the form is the document that governs the claim. Ask the seller to confirm that in writing before you pay.

Read before you buy

Some companies post a sample contract so you can read the definitions before you commit. If you cannot find one, ask for the full form and its definitions section, and treat a refusal as information.
