You are being asked to say yes once. Some contracts also ask for a yes that repeats, in the form of a renewal, an extension, or a rollover into a new term unless you act first. That line is easy to miss in a signing packet, and it decides whether your decision ends when the car leaves the lot.

Find the renewal words

Search the contract for renewal, extension, automatic, continuation, and rollover. Read the sentence that describes what happens when the term ends. Note whether the contract renews by default, asks you to opt in, or simply expires. Ask the seller to show you the page and paragraph. If the seller cannot find the language, the contract is not ready to sign.

Find the stop rule

If a renewal exists, find the clause that says how to stop it. Check how far ahead you must act, what form the notice must take (a letter, an email, a phone line, or a web form), and the exact address or line it must go to. Find out whether a phone call counts or whether only written notice does. Copy that address onto the paper you keep. A stop deadline you did not write down is a deadline you may miss.

Ask who bills, and where

Ask whether the bill comes from the seller, the company that answers claims, or a third party. Ask whether the renewal charge is tied to your car loan or lease payment, and what happens if the card on file expires. Ask what name the charge will show on your statement, so you recognize it when it arrives.

Check the change rule

Some renewal clauses let the company change terms for the next period. Find the clause that allows a change and read the notice it requires. Do not assume the terms you were shown at signing will apply to a later term. Ask for the change rule in writing before you agree.

Ask whether the seller earns from the sale

Ask the person selling the contract whether they earn a commission, a bonus, or any other payment tied to your purchase. A direct answer is a fair thing to ask for. An answer that avoids the question is information too.

Compare before you commit

Put the renewal and stop terms next to the cancellation terms and the waiting period. If you cannot locate the stop rule, treat that as a finding. For companies that post their paper, the list of vehicle service contract companies that post a sample contract you can read first is a practical place to read renewal language before you decide.
