The problem a service contract answers is the unplanned repair on a car you intend to keep running. Before you accept that problem as yours, check whether something you already have answers part of it. Many buyers never read the paperwork they received with the car.

Test whether the problem is yours

Ask a few plain questions. Is the car still inside the factory warranty? Do you expect to keep it past the point where that warranty ends? Would a single unplanned repair force you to borrow, delay work, or go without the car? If all of the answers are no, you may be buying protection against a risk you do not carry. If either of the other answers is yes, the problem is real enough to shop for.

Read the factory paper

Find the warranty booklet or the maker's online account for the car. Note what the factory coverage includes, which parts it leaves out, and what ends it by age and by mileage. Ask the dealer whether the maker sells its own extended plan for the model, and whether that plan is sold through the same seller who would sell you a contract.

Check card and membership benefits

Some credit cards and some membership programs add a benefit on certain purchases or services. Read the benefit guide rather than the marketing line. Look for what it covers, what it leaves out, the steps to claim it, and whether it applies to vehicle repairs at all. Ask whether the card must be the one used at the time of purchase.

Account for the overlap

If factory coverage still applies for part of the time, a service contract may repeat that protection for the same stretch. Ask the seller in writing which parts and which dates the contract covers that the factory coverage does not. Ask how the contract handles a repair that the factory coverage also touches. Do not accept a verbal answer.

Use the comparison pages

When you know you have the problem, read how this site scores what each company prints, then compare the start and exit terms that matter for your situation. The How We Score Vehicle Service Contract Companies page explains the rubric and the sources behind each line.
